The main objectives are:

To understand the process of early detection at ECDC

To train experts on Epidemic intelligence tools and platforms

To share best practices on epidemic intelligence among the experts in prevention and control of communicable diseases.

They can be classified in knowledge, skills or attitude objectives

Target audience

Professionals with public health background who have an interest in getting familiar with the tools, standards and practices adopted at technical level for the early detection at EU and international level.

Selection criteria

None, but attendants need to perform the EI e-tutorial before the course


ECDC experts will introduce the participants to the ECDC methods and tools for epidemic intelligence.

The course is including:

  • Description of early detection at ECDC and international level.
  • Detailed presentation on the different steps for Epidemic Intelligence
  • Learning by doing session with the main tools and aggregators used for EI
  • Participation to the round table meetings
  • Table top exercises for epidemic intelligence and threat analyse


Methods / format

Interactive presentations, multi-disciplinary discussions, exercise and participation to the ECDC daily round table meeting.

EI e-learning course to be done before the course

Competencies to be acquired

Participants are expected to strengthening their competences in:

  • Using the main open sources for EI
  • Understanding the different phases for EI: screening, filtering, validation, analyse, assessment and communication
  • Understand the international context for early detection, including early warning and response system (EWRS) and World Health Organization international health regulation (IHR) framework
  • Understand the main outputs of epidemic intelligence activities (roundtable (RT) reports, Weekly communicable disease threat reports (CDTR), rapid risk assessments (RRA))
